If you do a search for that error, there's a few people complaining about it. Have you had a dig through those in case anything makes sense?
The error message means that the data from Moodle about updates is empty. That points to a network issue of some sort. Are you on a corporate network that may be firewalled? You don't *have* to check the plugins... you can always update your optional plugins manually.
