Unfortunately, no progress has been made in this regard. As is often the case, there are 2 diverging points of view in the matter: programers tend to be paranoid, whilst "ordinary users" request what looks to them a "normal" feature of a piece of software.
The block I am working on at the moment aims at providing the "view moodle version" feature only to users selected by the admin.
