Hi
> I desparately want to install Moodle, preferably 2.x, on this old server.
It must be PowerPC hardware: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Macintosh_models_grouped_by_CPU_type#PowerPC. What model exactly?
I'm curious to know, why exactly this hardware is a must. If it is one of those 20 kg, 2 kW ovens you'll do the environment a big favour by recycling it!
> But if I can't to 2.x I am happy to use 1.9. I just want Moodle on this server.
The versions of system software each Moodle version needs are listed here: http://download.moodle.org/.
> I have tried several versions of installers and end up with a roadblock or two.
How exactly? What were the roadblocks?
> I have mysql 5.x already installed. Am using it for other things. it works great.

You need to know the exact versions. (It could be as simple as typing 'php -v', etc).
> When I go to install one of the packages. Moodle4Mac I think.
Since you are not mainstream, you should know what you are doing.
- The general instructions are here: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Installing_Moodle
- MAC specific: http://docs.moodle.org/en/Mac_Installation
- My version: http://www.syndrega.ch/?p=38 (for Debian GNU/Linux, still you should be able to get the general idea.)

I have no idea what you are talking about. But if it is your platform, you should know.
> 4) If I decide to bypass this stuff, the installer hangs and the installation doesn't complete.
Obviously you can't. Moodle depends on a whole stack of other software!
> The point is, I want to do this, but a combination of the older server and my being still a bit of a rookie, I can't get this done.

Hope the documentation linked above give you an idea.
> If I gave a trusted someone access to the server, could I pay you do make this installation right?
Not me, for idealogical reasons.
