Thanks for your kind suggestions, but I believe that the access problem was caused by IT, as they have notified that they have given us 'access'.

From my laptop, using Windows 7, if I type the IP address that we were given for the cenTOS virtual machine:

 134.26.65.163  

(it is probably an internal IP address, so you will not see it),

I get a message saying that the connection has time out.

I believe that I should be able to see a CENTOs test page, which is the default page (having installed Apache successfully), but I cannot see anything.
