Maybe the related database table/column can be modified directly, however this starts to sound riskier and riskier.

Craig, what about the web server environment? Do you have the minimum required versions? As it was a test server, have you considered doing again the whole upgrade process? Did you follow Howard's advice on enableing the debug option?
