Found some time to look at the link you provided in the previous post. Commented out the lines in \enrol\database\lib.php as the post indicates and I was able to log in.
Seems that even though we do not use the External Enrolment plugin, it was enabled and the specified field did have the invalid value. Once I fixed this, I was able to log in normally with the lines in lib.php uncommented.
Now I have a huge amount of work to do, it seems. No idea how to fix links to legacy files that are now all broken. SCORM files don't play. It's a mess. Challenges ahead. I can see why people choose the backup and restore alternative.
