I think I'll follow your advice to start afresh, John suggests trying to move things directly into a fresh 2.5 and If that doesn't work then I'll go via 1.9.19 to 2.5.
It's a small site with only about 25 short courses and 50 children who I register manually anyway.
Nice summer project! Better than struggling through 500 pages of MYSQL explained in French which a friend's just lent me! Everything's relative.
