- First, verify any plugins you use are available for a newer version. If Moodle is vanilla without plugins, that will help.
- Then upgrade to 1.9.19+. I would highly recommend making a copy of the site first (http://docs.moodle.org/19/en/Moodle_migration) and performing the upgrade on the copy to make sure it all goes right. In order to go to a newer version, 1.9.19+ is a requirement.
- You can upgrade through each version--I did, but technically, the next required step is the latest 2.2.x version. You will need to verify the environment (PHP/MySQL) is new enough before you make that upgrade. Again, I'd do the upgrade on a copy of the site first. This is a major upgrade--many things will change from 1.9.19+ to 2.2.x so a thorough check of your site at this point is absolutely necessary.
- Once that is done, you will need to upgrade the activities to the new activity format.
- Then you can upgrade to 2.6 or 2.7 depending on where you want to be.
That's the basic process. Going through the upgrade process retains whatever history you have on your site. It's no the only way to do it, but other methods tend to lose student data.
