New Installation - Moodle 2.4

I'm setting up a server to run a test install of Moodle 2.4, having not used moodle previously.

I have got a Linux Mint 14.1 base install to which I have added:

Apache 2.2.22
php 5.4.9 (and php.mysql)
mySql 5.5.28

I am looking at the php.ini file but can't find the settings to check/amend as per the moodledocs php installation instructions (http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/PHP) i.e. register_globals etc

It is the correct php.ini file (verifed from http://localhost/phpinfo.php)

I'm not a linux user (sorry) and would appreciate any help to get moodle up and running.
