Could be true, in general. But not for the OP, IMO.
a) Git is the original versioning system supported by the Moodle developers (other systems are wrappers)
b) The OP is on Linux, in the mainstream distribution Debian, where Git is only 'apt-get install git' away
c) The OP is moving revamping a server, a good occation to invest on future simplicity/efficiency ('git pull')
d) Although coming from Windows, the OP is careful/systematic. ;)
