Howard, I'm a bit confused, so help me out please!
External_database_authentication says:
"This method uses an external database table to check whether a given username and password is valid. If the account is a new one, then information from other fields may also be copied across into Moodle"
Does that mean that if a student exists on the external database but not in Moodle then the student will be created in Moodle? So, if I add say 10 new students to the external database then they will be automagically created ("synchronised") in Moodle? Is that correct?
