Can I use Git to upgrade from 2.2.7 to 2.4?

I'm using 2.2.7, just having done a 'git pull', but I can't work out from the docs if I can now just (having backed up) cd into the directory, which I have called 'StudyDesk', and do this.

cd StudyDesk

git branch --track MOODLE_24_STABLE origin/MOODLE_24_STABLE

git checkout MOODLE_24_MOODLE

and from then on as usual, it's just 

git pull

... having the site in Maintenance Mode, then go to notifications for it to update itself.

I am asking first, because it's a LOT of work installing plugins etc if it doesn't work.
