Vastus: Re: 500 Internal Server Error while installing

par Priit Karu.

The helpdesk ignored my request about their logfiles and recommended me to send my logfiles to the developers of Moodle, because "Moodle installation doesn't seem to work well on our platform"... I guess my job is done then?

Their recommendation was to install Moodle on another server and then move it to theirs, which worked.

That's 'different' ... but others have done something similar.  Strongly suggest keeping your process notes as Moodle will surely require an update and one will probably have to use whatever process you did to accomplish that update.  Key things to backup ... sql dump, the data directory, the config.php file of the moodle code folder.

moodle installation ?

Hello,

I am trying to setup a copy of my Moodle websites locally to do some tests,  and I have some successes and some failures.

SUCCESS

If I install "Moodle" all seems to work perfectly.

But because I want to have several sites, I need to change the folder names for Moodle and Moodle Data

So the only change I made was moved it to a subfolder ie.

Before:  MAMP/htdocs/moodle25

I also changed config.php to reflect this change

$CFG->wwwroot = 'http://localhost:/CLIENT/moodle25';

I try to refresh and I get a blank page...

Is there any other thing that I should be changing?

Thanks!

Hello,

The Windows platform is IIS and MySql.

Prior to the upgrade I could add both users and courses.

Firstly, I upgraded from 2.3.2 to 2.5.  But I could not add courses or users.  So I went back to backup and reinstated 2.3.2 all was working.  I then upgraded to 2.4.5 (as an interim) - but still the same issues.

Have you try on another web browser or with a different theme ?

Go to {yourmoodle}/theme/index.php in order to change your theme.

Thank you Tim. Yes, I read about git status which tells me or gives me a hint on the stage they are in and then what to do next.

By the way, where in Moodle Tracker can we get (or maybe there is no such thing) a list (preferably a download of a spreadsheet or delimited file of some sort) where we could test all the functionality after an upgrade so we could check these areas off before we put them into production?

Does moodle.org have their own checklist of all the functionality & areas they wish to test before they release it to the public? This is what I am look for so we could the same thing on our end?

Thanks

What an excellent set of questions:

There is a digested list of what has changed in each release in the release notes: http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.5_release_notes

That always contains a link to the full list of changes in the tracker: https://tracker.moodle.org/secure/IssueNavigator!executeAdvanced.jspa?jqlQuery=project+%3D+mdl+AND+resolution+%3D+fixed+AND+fixVersion+in+%28%222.5%22%29+ORDER+BY+priority+DESC&runQuery=true&clear=true but unless you are very patient, a list of 718 issues is pretty useless. You can download those issues in various forms using the 'Views' menu in the top right.

Moodle provides demo.moodle.net (running the latest stable version, currently 2.5.1+) and qa.moodle.net (running the latest development version, 2.6 dev or master) where you can always try out the latest functionality.

Before each major release, there is a big effort to get people to help with testing Moodle. See http://docs.moodle.org/dev/QA_testing. That uses this list of testcases: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDLQA-1. There is also a lot of automated testing, so the list of many test-cases was actually shorter for 2.5 than it was for 2.4.

can't install Moodle on Mac

I've not dodwnloaded or used Moodle before. A downloaded XAMPP (should I have downloaded MAMP? - couldn't see any advice on this), opened it in Applications, clicked XAMMP, was invited to start Apache, MySqL and FTP. But for "Start Apache" I get an error message "XAMPP's Apache cannot start while another webserver is using port 80. Please turn it off and try again". I have no idea what this means / how to "turn it off" etc.  have searched the forum but can't find any help on this; any help would be very welcome.

Hi Joan O'Hagan

Please go to Activity monitor application in your mac and you will see a long list of all your application which are running under process name columm first quit the process with name httpd and user besides is root after that quit all httpd process which has user nobody. After quiting all process you can restart your apache it will work.

Turn on Debugging and you will get a bit of extra information with that "Error writing to database" message. That should help track down the problem.

Did you make any changes to your Moodle environment (web server, database, Moodle code, etc.) before you started getting this error?

Hi Hanan,

I don't know what to make of that log, but at the end is what I think is causing the problem:

SMTP -> ERROR: Password not accepted from server: 535 Incorrect authentication data
SMTP Error: Could not authenticate.
