Re: mod_lti LTI 1.3 requires a valid openssl.cnf

Hi

I've just got that exact message on my live site. Didn't get it when testing when I had no ssl configured, but on my live site where it is HTTPS and I have actual certificates installed and configured I've suddenly got this message. I don't think they are openssl, they are bought and paid for and have the trust part. As you can see I'm not brilliant at certificates, but I know of the parts.

I'm upgrading to 3.8 on a Windows server with IIS,

Can you have two sets of certificates on one server or is that just going to create chaos?

Can I ignore it seen as I have got certificates, just not openssl ones? Is it just protesting because it doesn't like the flavour of my certificates?

Thank you

Heather

Re: Upgrading fails because of server timeout - help!

It is much too long after the action now, but my site usually does that because it is getting quite large. I find that if I just leave it a little bit, rather than rushing at it straight away as soon as the page times out and then in the url at the top take out whatever is after the main site name and put in /admin and hit return it usually comes back with the next part of the upgrade. It seems to keep running on the server, it is just my PC web page that has timed out, not the actual upgrade. I suspect I probably need to look at something in the IIS settings, but I'm not that sure about it.

If you don't do that and try to start the whole thing again, that's when you get the message about the site being upgraded.

A few things...

- Could you update your profile and change your name to your *real* name. I don't think you are the only "Moodle Developer". We like to know who we are speaking to.
- Can we get a clue where and how this happened? What's the version of Moodle? What where you doing?
- Switch on Debugging. Reproduce the error and paste the whole message

openssl is the software library for the security layer. It's not the certificates. Even if you bought the certificates you still need openssl (or a similar library).

Copy a course from 2.9.5 to 3.7

Hi, we have 2 different Moodle servers: the old one is a 2.9.5 version with several courses, the new one is a 3.7 not yet used. Is it possible to import a course from the old one to the new one?

We don' t need to upgrade the old one, just to have some of the courses on the new one.

Someone has got any experiences?

Many thanks

Backups from the 2.9.5 can be 'restored' to the 3.7.  Just make sure if you had used addons in the 2.9.5 courses, the 3.7 has the same addons installed - only compat versions for the 3.7.

Also ... there's a difference in 'import' and 'retsore'.   Import is meant to be used when the backup file (.mbz) comes from the **same server**.   In your case, you'd always be using 'restore'.

Cannot access moodle website after hosting service upgraded php

by Geoff Rochester.

I currently have moodle installed on a web hosting server that has been working fine for several years.

The web developer upgraded the hosting server PHP and now I cannot access or log into my moodle website.

As the Moodle website is not accessible I cannot check which version of Moodle I have but I installed it over three years ago and never did any upgrades. It may be around version 2

I have just installed Moodle 3.9 using cpanel in a different directory as I thought I might be able to back up the old database and restore to the new version but not sure if that's possible when I cannot log into the old version?

Im guessing it wont work to use the cpanel file manager to copy the old moodledata folder over to the new moodle data directory.

Any pointers would be appreciated

Hi

Moodle 2.x? No wonder. The highest compat. PHP version for the 2.x was 5.6. Ask your developer to undo the PHP upgrade or temporarily switch back to PHP 5.6.

You might be able to get a https://docs.moodle.org/en/Site_backup even if Moodle is not running. But you have to march it through intermediate releases to reach 3.9. See http://www.syndrega.ch/blog/#php-and-dbms-compatibility-of-major-moodle-releases for a summary (or release notes of all the releases in between).

Since everything is old, probably should have ask this one first ...

What is operating system of server?  CentOS/Ubuntu?

Either way, in the PHP info page of whatever version you have running right now the first line should show info about OS ... and version.

If CentOS 6 (el6 is seen in PHP info page), that reaches EoL in November of this year.  No more updates for OS.

If Ubuntu, hope it's a Long Term Support version.

Thanks
For anyone having a similar problem, I resolved the issue by having the web host provider role back the PHP version for just the moodle directory and now have access again so I can start the long road towards the latest moodle version. A lesson to stay on top of updates.

Issue in testing with XAMPP

Hi,

I get following error after setup the Moodle in Xampp server.

Apache error log (Xampp) shows following error.

[php7:warn] [pid 7608:tid 1920] [client ::1:61517] PHP Warning:  require_once(C:\\xampp\\htdocs\\test/cache/classes/config.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in C:\\xampp\\htdocs\\test\\cache\\lib.php on line 35

[php7:error] [pid 7608:tid 1920] [client ::1:61517] PHP Fatal error:  require_once(): Failed opening required 'C:\\xampp\\htdocs\\test/cache/classes/config.php' (include_path='C:\\xampp\\htdocs\\test/lib/pear;C:\\xampp\\php\\PEAR') in C:\\xampp\\htdocs\\test\\cache\\lib.php on line 35

Config.php is as follows

$CFG->dbtype    = 'mariadb';      // 'pgsql', 'mariadb', 'mysqli', 'sqlsrv' or 'oci'

$CFG->dblibrary = 'native';     // 'native' only at the moment

$CFG->dbhost    = 'localhost';  // eg 'localhost' or 'db.isp.com' or IP

$CFG->dbname    = 'test';     // database name, eg moodle

$CFG->dbuser    = 'root';   // your database username

$CFG->dbpass    = '';   // your database password

$CFG->wwwroot   = 'http://localhost/test';

$CFG->dataroot  = 'c:\xampp\htdocs\test-data';

What could be the reason for this issue?

More information:

I have setup a Moodle website in CentOS 7, nginx 1.16.1, php 7.2.31, MariaDB 10.3 server environment. For backup purpose there is an offsite CentOS 7 remote server and I rsync the Moodle website, data directory and the database to that server.

I wanted to test the backup and in my Windows PC I installed Xampp for Windows 7.2.31 and configured the above backup on this server. But I get this issue now. Also there is an another backup of the same Moodle website that archived using tar.gz (This backup is stored locally in a tape drive). This backup works in the same Xampp environment without any issues!

Hi,

I've been working in this instances for a while.

I'm trying to use Elasticache for the sessions in moodle 3.9, when I have the session memcache path activate, the session time out constantly the session in the website, but when I use the normal way this works fine.

any expirience working on that?

$SessionEndpoint = 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.use1.cache.amazonaws.com:11211';

$CFG->dbsessions = false;

$CFG->session_handler_class = '\core\session\memcached';

$CFG->session_memcached_save_path = $SessionEndpoint;

$CFG->session_memcached_prefix = 'memc.sess.key.';

$CFG->session_memcached_acquire_lock_timeout = 120;

$CFG->session_memcached_lock_expire = 7200;

$CFG->session_memcached_lock_retry_sleep = 150;

You've got quite the task there. Did it myself a few years back.
I won't repeat what others have said, but will add two more things to your list.
1. Off load as much as possible. Get rid of courses, users and defunct plugins before you begin. It'll make things simpler and faster.
2. Beware custom core code changes. This is probably the main reason people don't upgrade. These changes might break upgrade scripts, or at the very least produce unexpected functionality.

If the job seems too big in the time you have, perhaps it is worth starting fresh. You could export courses and users from the old dB, and use that as the basis for a csv bulk import on a new system. There'd be no content, but if your teachers pull together you could get it done.

Good luck

Moodle Upgrade 3.9 Maria DB Problem

by Halim Bstn.

Before starting the upgrade process, my hosting manager made the MariaDB Update process and when I saw the green OK sign in the Warning section, I started the upgrade. I backed up all my old files. I put the new 3.9 files on my server. When new files were uploaded, I logged in from the admin panel of my website. On the first screen, I clicked the continue sign and the booom gave an error with MariaDB. Is there anyone else who is facing such a situation?
