Cannot access Forum functionality in new install

Hi.

Installed Moodle yesterday and I'm very impressed so far, but one of the main functions we wish to use is the Forum option to provide interactive support to our students, and I can't get it to work.

I can add different types of forum to a course, and I can play with all the forum settings, but when I view the resulting forum, I get no 'create topic' button, and of course all the forums are empty, so no topic lists etc.

Have I done something daft, or has something in the installation failed?

Any pointers would be very useful, as this is driving me nuts after several hours of head scratching and reading the documentation.

I use a VPN, but have tried without it on, and have tried on Firefox and Edge browsers - same result.

Typical screengrab included below.

Thanks.

Could you give more details on what you mean by "the windows installer" ? It is relatively unusual to install Moodle onto a memory stick so perhaps you are not using the same install as most people.  It is very common to require tweaks to PHP when installing Moodle because PHP is a separate server component and comes with defaults that don't suite all web applications. This is a generic issue with all server side applications.

Interested in the manual setup of config.php could you point me in the direction of what i need to add?

Gary

Hi Barney,

Couple of questions:

1. What is the group mode setting for the course and/or forum? (See settings tab)
2. Do you have any groups in the course?

Thanks for your reply Paul.

I've never used Moodle before, so some of the terminology is a bit alien to me as is the significance of some of the settings, but on the settings tab for the Forum the Group mode is set to 'No groups'. For the course, settings are: Group mode set to 'No groups', Force group mode is 'No', Default grouping is 'None'.

I haven't knowingly set up any groups at all. I don't know if there are any set up by default, but I don't think so.

Copy config-dist.php to config.php and fill in the database details etc. manually. If you scroll down (section 7 I think) you can uncomment some lines to enable debugging.

I have no idea how this works in the context of the Windows installer. Sorry - I don't do Windows.

Just confirming (I imagine it is ) that you are using the default theme with no customisations and that you haven't changed any permissions of any roles? (I have been searching too because I do remember someone posting a similar problem a few weeks back but I haven't found it yet, sorry.)

Thanks.

I switched the Site admin presets to starter, and set the default theme to 'Boost' from 'Classic' with no customisations. Legacy, Mobile and Tablet specific themes are unchanged (blank). I've not knowingly changed any permissions for any given role.

Moodle App 4.0 (working offline)

Hi all,

Is there any way to migrate the moodle app with the contents downloaded from a device with antroid 11 to another device with android 11, since I want to download all the contents of the moodle site in the app of a device and then take the files from the root of the android system and move them to another device then place them in the system paths and install the apk.

So far I have not been successful, this is to take the classroom to a place where there is no internet connection or mobile data.

I appreciate if anyone has an idea.

Hi

I don't understand the mobile operating systems to answer your original question. But there is a nifty gadget to take a Moodle classroom to an Internet-free zone, it is called the MoodleBox https://moodlebox.net.

Please note that the MoodleBox is a different group, in fact a single developer, not a part of moodle.org. They have their own forum https://discuss.moodlebox.net/.

Hello, thank you very much for your contribution, I am already reviewing what you sent, it seems to me a very useful option.

Hi all,

we would like to migrate (400+) users from moodle 3.9 to 3.11. Is this possible to migrate users with their password from old moodle to newer one.

It depends exactly what you mean... but the answer is probably 'yes'.

Are you upgrading, migrating and upgrading or simply moving users from one Moodle to another?

Internal Server error while updating plugins during install

Hello everyone,

I am a first time user of Moodle and this is my first attempt at doing the install.

I got over the missing version in config by editing the file and re-uploading it as per the instructions on the help page however i can't find any help for this and i don't know enough to even describe the issue. I'm hoping i can upload the screen shots.

This has happened 3 times and once it errors (takes about 10mins) I leave the page and come back to it and it has reset back 2 steps in the install process.

Any help on how to move forward would be awesome.

Thanks

Andrew

"... got over the missing version in config by editing the file and re-uploading it as per the instructions on the help page."

Ooops!   Should really never have to do the above ... so please share what help page you saw and where it's located?

Normally, if all check screen pass muster, the install goes well ... but yours did not and without some more details about hosting environment kinda hard to give specifics.

Have you gone over (perhaps again), install instructions? ... Appears you are attempting to install a 3.11 of moodle, BTW.

https://docs.moodle.org/311/en/Installing_Moodle

Have sluethed you are hosted with DreamHost .. mind shaing what type of hosting?   Shared/VPS Managed/VPS Un-managed, on Linux (Ubuntu/Debian/?), etc..   And have you looked at your apache server's error logs to see what that might reveal?

'SoS', Ken

I have notice that each time this has happened the amount of Plugins that require attention is going down. this time it is down to 163.

The help page was a moodle page that you clicked on the link that had more info about your issue.
https://docs.moodle.org/310/en/error/debug/missingconfigversion

I don't know how to get you the server info you are after.
I am a complete novice to all this stuff and trying to fumble my way through.

As for the moodle version, it was whatever the latest download file was.

A re-install fixed the problem, though I originally had no error message using the web installer. I have another issue with the database, but I'll post that in a new thread.
