Re: No longer see Course Administration block

by Marilyn Komarnisky.

Thank you for your reply…I was beginning to lose hope that anyone would!

So I did what you recommended but I found that the eye icon was open, not shut, and thought I had hit a dead end.

However, on further investigation I saw that the Protect Instances had the lock icon.  So I searched the Instances to see a listing of courses that contained the Administration block and sure enough the troublesome course was not listed.  So I unlocked Protect Instances, went back to the troublesome course and could then add the Administration block.

Thank you so very, very much!!

Now for my next question.  Is there a good reason to have Protect Instances locked?  My understanding is that only teachers and managers can see the course administration block.  I think whoever did our upgrade and migration to a new server may have introduced the lock and I no longer have the opportunity to communicate with him as to his reasons or if it was accidental.  If there is a good reason to keep this locked then I will do so and just temporarily unlock it whenever a new course is created so we can add the Administration block to it.

Re: Error calling message processor email - Resolved

by Tifano T.

Hi itsupport and Aron,

As I didn't have much time to dig further into the error, I just changed to using another SMTP service (Sendgrid)

However, you could try matching SMTP username email and Support contact email.

That's what I was advised by Microsoft support team, unfortunately didn't work for me but looks like worked for some.

Cheers

"URL was not found" error following update of v. 2.8

by John Lawrence.

I have been developing a course using version 2.8.  After downloading Xcode and Git, I followed the directions regarding "How to update".  Everything appeared to go normally with no errors during the update.  Later, after logging off, I sought to continue my development of the course.   MAMP is starting properly and both servers are working however, when I type in "localhost:8888/moodle28, I get a URL error 404 stating that, "The requested URL /moodle28/ was not found on this server".  Any ideas?

Re: "URL was not found" error following update of v. 2.8

by Tifano T.

Hi John,

Looks like the moodle28 is no longer in the same (url) location as the one typed.

Is your config file having the same path? check to confirm.

Or you may check the port as well, might have been changed?

Cheers

Re: "URL was not found" error following update of v. 2.8

by Howard Miller.

Well, it won't be the port as that message comes from the web server. It also won't be the config.php file as you would get a rude message from moodle. The problem is that there isn't anything there at whereever /moodle28 points to. Are you sure that's right? Unless you specifically moved the Moodle files then the new path should be the same as the old (pre upgrade) one.

Re: No longer see Course Administration block

by nivedita setru.

No worries, Marilyn.

Is there a good reason to have Protect Instances locked?

>> Yes, enabling protected mode on blocks will prevent users from deleting blocks. Hence, certain blocks like 'administration' and 'navigation' have protect mode enabled, as it could be quite difficult to retrieve these blocks if they are deleted.

However, I doubt if administration block was accidentally deleted on your Moodle site. And that's probably the reason, why you were unable to add administration block on any of the courses.

Could you try instructions below and see if setting 'administartion block to 'display site-wide' fixes the issue

  1. Go to Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Blocks > Manage blocks (or via the URLhttp://yourmoodlesite.org/admin/blocks.php) and unprotect the administration block by clicking the padlock icon
  2. Turn editing on in any course
  3. Go to the front page and use the 'Add a block' dropdown menu to add a administration block there, setting it to display throughout the entire site
  4. Go back to Administration > Site administration > Plugins > Blocks > Manage blocks and re-protect the navigation block.

I see!

Yeah, you are correct!

Didn't understand the message was coming from the server.

Re: Upgrading from 2.0 to 2.5, simple?

by Gilles Gagnon.

Thanks. I don't think I'd be able to use this script as the site is on a shared host... no access to the "console" or command line.

I could be wrong.

Re: Moodle 2.6.2 & MSSQL2008

by Johnny Lo.

I know it is an old post. I'm in similar situation where I am to upgrade my MSSQL database from 2005 to 2008. Any suggestion on the best procedure? Full backup and Restore? Or use the migration tool inside Moodle? I am upgrade Moodle from 2.6 to 2.8 after database upgrade.

Three of my shared hosting companies all provide access via ssh.  If it doesn't appear that yours does, make sure to ask (or demand.)

Bret's script is very good, and I have learned from him. (Thanks Bret.)

Re: Upgrading from 2.0 to 2.5, simple?

by Rick Jerz.

Bret, help me understand a few things.

Does what you do in your script automatically make entries into the server's log file?  Or would it make sense to log the events is your own "backup.log" file, somewhere?  In particular, I would like to monitor when this script begins, and when it ends in order to know exactly how long my moodle is in Maintenance mode.  I could probably (somehow) subtract mydate from an ending date (after maintenance mode is disabled.)

I see that you "echo" some messages.  Are these really needed?  Are these only there for a person who might be watching, or do they serve some other purpose?

When I do my current backup, I don't put my Moodle into maintenance mode.  I can see the benefit - to keep the database and moodledata exactly in sync.

Re: Upgrading from 2.0 to 2.5, simple?

by Gilles Gagnon.

ok... Thanks. I've never used this feature of shared hosting.
Again, I'm used to Joomla (and Wordpress) where generating full backups is very simple and available via free easy-to-use extensions/plugins.

Does anyone have an answer on nunmber 1 above? The question about QuizMaker?

Re: Upgrading from 2.0 to 2.5, simple?

by Bret Miller.

Hi Rick,

Glad it was helpful. I don't make any log entries. This was actually chopped out of my upgrade script, so it's not what I generally use for daily site backup. But any time I upgrade our live site, a full site backup gets done first.

Certainly you could pipe a couple of echo's to a log file to see each time the backup script started and ended. I don't do it here because upgrades are always in me-watching mode.

The echos are not needed. For me, since this is my upgrade script, it gives me a sense of where in the process the script is. Otherwise it would sit there for a long time with no feedback.

I only do my pre-upgrade backup in maintenance mode since that guarantees I have a good backup. For daily backups I dump the database and use rsync to download it and all the files to a local server where it gets backed up and shipped offsite per our normal backup policy. Plus rsync only has to copy the files that changed which significantly reduces the bandwidth requirements.

I do the offsite because once we had a disk controller die on the VPS host at the hosting company corrupting all the data. Yeah, they restored it, but we lost a few weeks in the process. Apparently, their idea of backup is not the same as mine. So now I have yesterday's backup on my local server, disk and tape backup so the ability to restore is more "guaranteed".

Need to start CRON but partial install has stopped it. HELP!

by Joey Barclay.

I created another post about the error "Mixed Moodle Versions" message screen I am getting. I am going to move my installation or just start over but cannot do that now. I need to figure out what triggers this message, stop it, so CRON will start again.  I cannot access the root of the server as I am on a GoDaddy VPS running Linux. It is totally ridiculous. Had I known when my person who set this up did it I would have never done it this way. Anyway he is gone and I need to see if I can stop the warning about the installation being started but stopped and see if I can get CRON to start running again. I just need to finish out the rest of our quarter and then do the right thing but for now I just need to band-aid it to get by.

Looked for a "Search" folder to remove as one post mentioned and cannot find it. Been looking in a thousand PHP files for something resembling the error and cannot find that either.

If anyone could help me figure this out or tell me what I should go and look for I would really appreciate it. Moodle Version 2.8, I think he installed over 2.7.

Anyone was facing a similar experience when using paypal

by epayglobal liang.

hello everyone, Begging help!!!I'm a big fan of paypal, but I encounter some problems with paypal and need further information to debug them. I think paypal adoption will remain limited since it doesn't enable automated synching of local accounts.Specifically, i received an error message when I tried to log in the account in uk, which was registered in Singapore. Anyone was facing a similar experience? This may not bother you but it really bothered me. Just be aware.I have deposited so much money in my account, how do i withdraw them? By the way, anyone can recommend another alternative for payment processor which enable automated synching of accounts? On the other hand, i can't stand the high fee from paypal any longer!!! i have found another online payment processor on goole, www.epay.com, which is an independent Chinese company and i did not hear it before. They claim that payers do not need to pay any commission fee.Has anyone tried this? any feedback?
