un compressing tgz file

by Bob Hamilton.

I am a new used.  I downloaded the tgz file from

https://download.moodle.org/releases/latest/

to my Windows PC and ftp'd the file (binary mode) to the Verio hostserver.  I then un-compressed the file.  I received the message "an error occurred". The moodle directory had many folders and files so I used the web  URL install option. After entering the database parameters, the install proceeded, but then got a database read error.  I hope the database read error is due to the un compress error.

I also tried the Zip file, but received the "an error occurred" when un-compressing.

Verio supports PHP and MySql so I was hoping moodle would work.

If you are having trouble uncompressing the file then that needs sorted. It's very unlikely to be a Moodle issue. Have you asked Verio's support to look into this?

So you have it set up with a dns name - is that name still good?  Or is that what changed?  Is this a brand new installation?  If so, I suggest deleting everything and starting again...

Moodle Install and Upgrade Saga - Part 2

$

by Gary Evans.

Resolved previous issue trying to upgrade from Moodle 2.3.2 (new install a few days ago – no courses, users etc set up yet) to 3.0.3 – needed small edit to .htaccess to enable php 5.5.

Now moved past that error message to a screen indicating that I am in Maintenance Mode and that I am about to automatically upgrade to v3.0.3 (+ a warning that cannot go back). Clicked continue to begin the upgrade - sequence of events detailed below (sorry, but it is quite long!!!):

1)      Server Checks – 2 items with status “Check” (php_setting – opcache.enable + unsupported_db_table_row_format) + message confirming “Your server environment meets all minimum requirements” in a reassuring green colour. I presumed that the 2 items flagged were optional and/or could be resolved later, so I clicked ‘Continue’.

2)      Plugins Check

a.       Unavailable missing dependencies – “Not in the Plugins directory: mod_feedback, mod_glossary, mod_forum, mod_quiz, mod_data, mod_assign”

b.       Plugins requiring attention – 381 out of 381! I have not installed any plugins, so assume part of core install. Under heading ‘Source/Status’ most items showed “Standard – To be upgraded”,  “Standard – To be installed” or “Standard – To be deleted”. These messages suggest will be fixed as part of upgrade (or perhaps I am naïve).

c.       Plugins requiring attention – 2 types of message were more concerning “Standard – Missing from disk!” and for 8 of the items that were “Standard – To be upgraded” there was a warning in ‘Requires’ column that “Fails – Unavailable”

d.       Clicked ‘Check for available updates’ button - apart from adding a message conforming when last check was run, it didn’t seem to do anything

e.       Not seeing what else I could do from this screen, I clicked ‘Upgrade Moodle database now’

3)      Plugin Dependencies Check – items flagged as “Fails – Unavailable” stopped me in my tracks as it warns that must solve before proceeding (block_feedback, block_glossary_random, block_news_items, block_quiz_results, block_search_forums, filter_data, filter_glossary, tool_assignmentupgrade)

Just a thought, but before starting upgrade I moved all content of Moodle folder into a folder called ‘oldmoodle’ – do I need to copy back plugins from here? I couldn’t find a folder called plugins or similar, but I noted:

1) oldmoodle/mod contains folders which mirror the “Standard – Missing from disk!” entries (these sub-folders do NOT exist under moodle/mod though) – do I just copy folders + contents over e.g. oldmoodle/mod/assign to moodle/mod/assign?

2)      2) Sub-folders of oldmoodle that mirror the “Fails – Unavailable” entries – do I just copy folders + contents over e.g. oldmoodle/blocks/feedback to moodle/blocks/feedback? These folders DO already exist under moodle and contain a single php file with filename as per folder it sits in + for some also a sub-folder called ‘backup’. If I copy over, this will overwrite those php files and any backup folder that already exists – is that OK? NB – I haven’t started using Moodle yet, so I have not created any content/backups as yet.

Any useful insights much appreciated.

Please review what you've done against:

https://docs.moodle.org/30/en/Upgrading#Standard_install_package

Some of the mod directories missing should have been included in the zip/targz aquired from Moodle.org.   They are 'standard' mods .. ie, comes with every version.

In the link above, it does say ... any additional mods/blocks/themes residing in oldcode directory should be copied to the same locations in newcode directory .... *before* starting the upgrade.

Do hope you started the entire process with a backup of your DB and backup of the code.    Always ... *ALWAYS* ... the first step in upgrading to higher version.

There have been many changes in code from 2.3.x to the highest 3.0.3+ code - what you are doing is what I've called 'hyperjump' ... skipping 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9. -> 3.0.3.   There might be some hickups awaiting you with such a leap.

If there was nothing in the 2.3 why upgrade?   Why not install a fresh 3.highest?

Hello all

After updating some plugins (poodl filter, games), i got stuck on a /admin/upgradesettings.php blank page. Impossible to get to the settings page.
My site (Moodle 2.8) is now unreachable :http://www.sshn.fr/
Ever had that problem ?

Any idea on how to fix that

Thanks

Try going directly to http://site/admin/purgecaches.php   You will be prompted to login if session has timed out.

If you upgraded both at the same time, sometimes, Moodle gets confused in display of new settings screens on certain combos - in your case, can't generate a new settings screens for the items you've updated.

Might have to navigate directly to areas for plugins ...

Filters (for poodle): http://site/admin/filters.php

And/Or

Activities (for games): http://site/admin/modules.php

Thanks a lot Ken

It was clearly a problem with updating more than one plugin at the same time !

I just got the site working by deleting the plugin that was causing problem (Poodl) and restoring it afterwards via FTP.
Works well now.
Thanks again for the tips

Linux file permissions?

Check the permissions on one of the new files you have added that is working and then set the others to match that.

Also check that all the database entries for a working file match (in format and what should be comparable) with one that isn't working.

Good to know you got well! Just be a bit careful as Hay fever must be all around!

It is possible to move to another drive, but then there will be changes in my.cnf file together with moving data and logs, best would be uninstalling and doing re-install again (this I would have done).

Now regarding letting it out to local intranet, Step by Step, you'll be doing this

1: allocate static IP address to your network card

2: make changes to your config.php file to accommodate the new IP (for example: http://123.456.789.012/moodle, or if domain name is allocated, give that instead.

your moodle will be accessible on network.

Also, why haven't you made use of PHP 7? for performance will be twice.

Also importantly (as this I haven't mentioned in video), when installing MariaDB, the amount of buffer it allocates automatically to DB is 12.5% of the total RAM, that would be close to 4GB (4000MB ish) in your case, if you want you can safely allocate 20-30% of the RAM making it 7000-10,000MB of Buffer, as in case if you're setting up dedicated DB server, then allocating 80% of the RAM is considered good option. dont worry about RAM allocation, as this step an be performed at later stage without interrupting installation, and in 2-3 days I will be uploading additional video about using WinCache (just been updated) with OpCache, do look out for that too for bringing out the performance out of your IIS based Moodle.

Newbie: After install, how do I call first moodle page?

by Bob Herrmann.

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong or missing steps.  maybe someone can help me out.  I downloaded Moodle 3.0 zip file and copied to the server at our hosting company.  I unzipped the file.  I was looking at the folders under Moodle, and it looks like everything is there.  I thought I could now start using Moodle.  Or am I missing steps?  I have not created a database.  It seems Moodle would need a database.  I can't seem to find instructions on what i should do next.  And maybe I installed incorrectly.  Can I just copy and paste the Moodle folder to my site as I did?

I'm doing all of this on a Windows server.

Any help would be appreciated!

Bob,

Moodle being a dynamic learning script, it has to be built upon 3 underlying requirements, Web Server (That'll be  your IIS comes bundled with Windows Server O/S), Application server as in PHP as Moodle is written in PHP, and finally database server (MySQL,MariaDB, MS-SQL etc etc)

Just follow instructions HERE. As I created the videos for people just like us starting with Moodle on Windows server having no idea what to do. God willing In 2 hours time you'll be up and ready with Moodle running on your server.

Watch both videos, but preferably use 2nd video method using PHP manager.

Hi again,

Ok sounds like the best thing will be to uninstall SQL, Moodle and php. Then reinstall  them where they should be per your blog

I didn't use php7 as just running and following the blog initially to see how it went.

Power outage today so will start tomorrow

I've used PHP 7 in 2nd video, using PHP manager, yuo can skip using PHP manager but is very recommended for not only it makes managing PHP, it's settings as well managing extensions  and their settings easier, as well it automatically tunes the FastCGI module to get best out of your server. Just make sure you're  using Moodle 3.0.1+ to be used with PHP 7.
