Since you mentioned a server administrator, I assume that this server is in house. It is also Linux, right? Which distribution (Debian, Ubuntu, RedHat, CentOS, ...)?
What exactly is your Intranet? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intranet is not that straightforward. Do you mean that the server will be accessible only within the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_area_network of your institution? Is it the same as the column 'LAN-only' in http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Installing_Moodle_on_Debian_based_distributions#Scope ? If so, go through the whole document to understand how the Moodle configuration and the network configuration are related. If your server is Debian or a derivative like Ubuntu, the best thing is to ask the server administrator to read the document mentioned above.
